I don't get Shakespeare?

How does reading Shakespeare benefit me for my future, as a person, intellectually, etc. I am just asking this because I have read several Shakespearean books, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and most recently Hamlet, and I do not see any plausible purpose for these mandatory readings. Besides, shouldn't a play be viewed as a play instead of being prioritizingly read.
