Why does Michael Phelps look so cool in the pool, and such a dumb outside of it?

Every time he's geared up in the oakley looking googles and the cap he looks like a . But as soon as he's out of the pool on the medal stand or just hanging around he looks like my dumb cousin with that weird lopsided grin. Whats up with that?
